Optimal control

When the fastest control just slams between its two limits

Bang-bang control is a control law that takes only its extreme admissible values, switching abruptly between them rather than varying smoothly. It arises as the optimal solution to many minimum-time problems with bounded inputs: Pontryagin and colleagues' The Mathematical Theory of Optimal Processes established, through the maximum principle, that when the problem is linear in a bounded control the time-optimal input is bang-bang, switching at instants fixed by the costate. The referent is this extremal switching strategy, characterised by its switching surface and the number of switches, and it anchors the time-optimal corner of the control map.[1]

Unit
The switching times and surface at which the control jumps between its bounds
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Specified by the switching function whose sign sets the control to its upper or lower bound, and by the resulting switching instants
