Ophthalmology

Severe or total loss of functional vision

In ophthalmology blindness is severe loss of functional vision, graded by measured visual acuity and field against defined thresholds rather than by the lay meaning of seeing nothing at all. Dandona and Dandona's revision of the visual-impairment categories in the International Classification of Diseases shows how the cut-offs that define blindness are set and why their wording matters for statistics. The referent is a clinically graded level of vision loss, measured by acuity and visual field, and it has nothing to do with a forced bet or a masked trial.[1]

Unit
Measured visual acuity and field against defined thresholds
Recovery means
Some causes are reversible with treatment; the category marks current measured vision, not permanence
Measured by
Graded by best-corrected visual acuity and visual-field extent against ICD thresholds
