In fire safety, a boilover is the sudden, violent ejection of burning fuel from a tank of crude oil or similar wide-boiling liquid: as the fuel burns at the surface a hot layer grows and travels downward until it reaches water at the tank bottom, which flashes to steam and hurls the overlying oil upward as a towering burning fountain. Koseki's 1993 Boilover and crude oil fire and later large-scale experiments characterised the growing hot zone and the delay before the event. The referent is this delayed, abrupt eruption of a storage-tank fire, a major hazard because it can happen hours into a fire and throw burning oil well beyond the tank, distinct from the gentler slopover or frothover.[1][2]
