Epidemiology

Share of diagnosed cases that die of the disease

The case fatality rate is the proportion of people diagnosed with a disease who die from it, a measure of how lethal the illness is among recognised cases rather than how common it is. It is distinct from the mortality rate, which is measured against the whole population, and it is sensitive to how completely mild cases are detected and to the lag between diagnosis and death. Ghani and colleagues' 2005 Methods for estimating the case fatality ratio for a novel, emerging infectious disease sets out how to estimate it without bias during an ongoing epidemic. The referent is a severity measure, deaths divided by cases, conditioned on being a case.[1][2]
