How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to corona is spike.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Meteorology and atmospheric optics

coloured rings seen close around the Sun or Moon, made by diffraction through small cloud droplets.

A set of coloured rings seen close around the Sun or Moon when its light passes through a thin cloud of small water droplets: the rings are made by diffraction, and their size depends on the size of the droplets, with smaller drops giving wider rings. It is a phenomenon of the atmosphere and of the wave nature of light, distinct from the larger haloes cast by ice crystals. Cowley, Laven, and Vollmer's 2005 Rings around the sun and moon: coronae and diffraction explained how the pattern forms and what it reveals about the droplets. The referent is an optical pattern in the sky, described by its angular size and colours, not a stellar atmosphere, a part of a flower, or the crown of a virus.[1]

Unit
A ring pattern of diffracted light around the Sun or Moon, by its angular size and colours
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Observed and photographed as coloured rings, with droplet size estimated from the angular radius of the rings
