Digital electronics

A sequential circuit that counts clock pulses

In digital electronics a counter is a sequential logic circuit, built from flip-flops, whose state advances through a defined sequence with each clock pulse, so its output records the number of pulses or events received, as in binary ripple and synchronous counters and modulo-N designs. Mano and Ciletti's Digital design develops counters as standard sequential building blocks together with their timing and modulus behaviour. The referent is a state-holding counting circuit, specified by its modulus and clocking, entirely distinct from the stiffener at the back of a shoe.[1]

Unit

Measured by
Specified by modulus, maximum count, and clocking scheme (ripple vs synchronous)
