A daguerreotype is the first commercially successful photographic process, a direct positive formed as a unique image on a polished silver-coated copper plate made light-sensitive with iodine vapour, developed with mercury, and fixed; the image is built from micrometre-scale silver-mercury particles that scatter light so the picture shifts between positive and negative as the mirror plate is tilted. Centeno and colleagues' 2011 The formation of chlorine-induced alterations in daguerreotype image particles studied these particles and how they degrade, part of the conservation science of the medium. The referent is this specific image-on-silver object and its material structure, a distinct photographic process rather than a general imaging concept.[1]
