A metrical break where a foot boundary coincides with a word boundary

In prosody and metrics, diaeresis is the coincidence of a foot boundary with a word boundary, which produces a metrical break. This meaning comes from West (1982) in Greek metre. Here diaeresis is not the pronunciation of two adjacent vowels as separate syllables, nor the surgical division of tissues.[1]
