In astronomy a globular cluster is a dense, roughly spherical swarm of hundreds of thousands of old stars, bound by gravity and orbiting a galaxy's halo, named for its globe-like appearance. Harris's 1996 A catalog of parameters for globular clusters in the Milky Way compiled the standard database of their positions, distances, metallicities, and structural parameters. The referent is a stellar system characterised by its luminosity, concentration, and age, sharing only its shape-word with a folded protein or a drop of weld metal.[1]
In gas metal arc welding, globular transfer is the mode in which molten metal collects at the electrode tip as a large drop, wider than the wire, before detaching and falling across the arc under gravity, giving a coarse, spatter-prone transfer that occurs below the current at which fine spray transfer takes over. Lowke's 2009 Physical basis for the transition from globular to spray modes in gas metal arc welding explains why the drop size collapses at that threshold. The referent is a metal-transfer regime defined by drop size and detachment, sharing only the word with a stellar swarm or a folded protein.[2]
