In fracture mechanics, Griffith criterion refers to the condition that a crack grows when the elastic energy it releases exceeds the energy needed to create new crack surfaces. This meaning comes from Griffith (1921) in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Containing Papers of a Mathematical or Physical Character.[1]
