A halo around bright points from light scattering within the film

In film photography, halation is the halo or spread of exposure around a bright point or high-contrast edge caused when light passes through the emulsion, reflects off the film base or its rear surface, and re-exposes the emulsion from behind. Langford's Basic photography notes that films carry an anti-halation backing or layer to absorb this stray light. The referent is an unwanted spreading of the image around bright features, worst with intense highlights against dark surroundings.[1]
