In coordination chemistry, inverted ligand field refers to a bonding situation in which the metal-ligand antibonding orbitals are mainly ligand-based rather than metal-based, which upsets usual assumptions about oxidation state and d-electron count. This meaning comes from Hoffmann (2016) in Chemical Reviews.[1]
