plant: a standalone construct

One name. One construct. A landmark on the map.

How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to plant is capacity.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

The system to be controlled

In control theory the plant is the physical process whose behavior a controller regulates: it is represented by a plant model or a plant transfer function that maps control inputs to measured outputs, and the controller acts on it to hold a reference despite disturbances. Ogata's Modern Control Engineering defines any physical object to be controlled as the plant, whether a motor, a reactor, or an aircraft. The referent is an abstract input to output system standing in for the thing being regulated, not a growing organism, a factory as an economic establishment, or a planted agent.[1]

Unit
A dynamic input to output system, given as a transfer function or state model
Recovery means
Left alone the plant follows its own dynamics; a controller in feedback is what returns it to a reference
Measured by
Identified from input and output data as a transfer function or state-space model, then validated against the real process
