Asking a sample to estimate a population's views

In survey research, a poll is a measurement of a population's opinions or intentions by questioning a sample and generalising to the whole, the opinion or election poll being the familiar case. Groves and colleagues set out the methodology: how sampling, question wording, and non-response shape whether the sample's answers actually estimate the population's distribution. The referent is sample-based estimation of collective opinion, a different construct from a processor repeatedly checking a device.[1]
