Barthes's punctum: the piercing, personal detail of a photograph that wounds the viewer, opposed to the studium.

In photography theory, punctum refers to Barthes's punctum: the piercing, personal detail of a photograph that wounds the viewer, opposed to the studium. This meaning comes from Barthes (1980/1981) in Camera lucida. Here punctum is not a punctum: the basic single-note neume, a square notehead representing one pitch.[1]
