In programming languages, refinement types refers to types refined by predicates or subsorts that describe subsets of values, allowing finer static checks within an existing type system. This meaning comes from Freeman (1991) in Proceedings of the ACM SIGPLAN 1991 conference on Programming language design and implementation - PLDI '91.[1]
