Liquid cooled below its saturation temperature

In refrigeration subcooling is the number of degrees by which liquid refrigerant leaving the condenser is cooled below its saturation (condensing) temperature at that pressure, ensuring a solid column of liquid, free of flash gas, reaches the expansion device and raising the refrigerating effect per unit of flow. Stoecker and Jones's Refrigeration and air conditioning and Çengel and Boles's Thermodynamics: An engineering approach treat subcooling as a standard way to improve vapour-compression cycle performance. The referent is a negative temperature difference below the saturation line for a liquid, measured at the condenser outlet, the mirror image of superheat on the vapour side, and distinct from the physics meaning of supercooling a liquid below its freezing point.[1][2]
