Coastal science

Water rushing up and down the beach face

In coastal science, the swash is the thin, turbulent sheet of water that rushes up the beach face after a wave breaks and then drains back down, the alternating uprush and backwash that forms the landward edge of the surf zone. Elfrink and Baldock's 2002 review Hydrodynamics and sediment transport in the swash zone: a review and perspectives treats it as a distinct hydrodynamic regime where very shallow, unsteady flow moves large volumes of sand and sets the shape of the shoreline. The referent is a flow process on the beach face, quantified by swash excursion, uprush and backwash velocities, and the sediment it carries, and it has nothing in common with an ornamental letterform beyond the word.[1]

Unit
The uprush-and-backwash flow on the beach face and the sediment it moves
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Characterised by swash excursion length, uprush and backwash velocities, and net cross-shore sediment transport on the beach face
