Volcanology

All airborne fragments thrown out by an eruption

Tephra is the collective term for all fragmental material ejected by a volcano and transported through the air, regardless of its size, shape, or composition, from fine ash through lapilli to blocks and bombs. Treating the airborne ejecta as one family lets volcanologists reconstruct an eruption from its deposit, as Fisher and Schmincke's 1984 synthesis of pyroclastic rocks sets out, by mapping how thickness and grain size fall off with distance from the vent. The referent is the whole population of airborne pyroclasts, the umbrella under which size classes such as ash and lapilli sit.[1]
