In programming languages, type class refers to a mechanism for principled overloading in which a class declares operations and instance declarations supply them for particular types, resolved by type inference. This meaning comes from Wadler (1989) in Proceedings of the 16th ACM SIGPLAN-SIGACT symposium on Principles of programming languages - POPL '89.[1]
