Meteorology

A midlatitude low that deepens explosively

Bombogenesis is the explosive intensification of an extratropical (midlatitude) cyclone, in which the storm's central pressure falls so fast that the system behaves like a winter equivalent of a hurricane in its rate of deepening. Sanders and Gyakum's 1980 Synoptic-dynamic climatology of the "bomb" gave the quantitative threshold still in use: a central-pressure drop of at least 24 hectopascals in 24 hours, geostrophically adjusted to a reference latitude of 60°, which they called a rate of one "bergeron". The referent is a rate of pressure fall in a developing cyclone, and the term is a meteorological coinage with no connection to explosives beyond the borrowed metaphor of something detonating.[1]

Unit
The rate at which a cyclone's central pressure falls (hectopascals per 24 hours)
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Measured by the 24-hour fall in central pressure, normalised to 60° latitude, against the 24 hPa "bomb" threshold
