A cheap distance transform for matching edges

In image analysis the chamfer distance approximates the Euclidean distance between pixels by propagating small integer step-costs across a local neighbourhood, yielding a distance map measured out from a set of edge points. Chamfer matching then overlays a template on that map and scores the fit by the mean distance from the template's edges to the nearest image edges. Borgefors's Distance transformations in digital images set out the weighted propagation masks and her Hierarchical chamfer matching built them into a coarse-to-fine edge-matching algorithm. The referent is a computational distance and matching score, unrelated to a bevelled workpiece edge beyond the shared image of a corner stepped off in small increments.[1][2]
