Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Victor Turner coined communitas in The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure (1969) to name the intense, unstructured, and egalitarian bond that people feel with one another during the liminal phase of a ritual, the transitional threshold when initiates have left their old social roles behind but have not yet taken on new ones. In that phase the ordinary web of ranks, titles, and hierarchy that Turner called social structure falls away, and participants meet as undifferentiated equals in a direct and often emotionally charged fellowship he set opposite to structure and named anti-structure. Turner further distinguished spontaneous or existential communitas, the fleeting shared moment, from normative communitas, which is organised into a lasting group, and ideological communitas, which is projected as a blueprint for an ideal society. The construct has since been carried well beyond initiation rites into the study of pilgrimage, festivals, tourism, and social movements, and Edith Turner (2012) later documented it across cultures as a recurring experience of collective joy. Its distinctiveness lies in naming a specific relational state, a momentary equality outside ordinary roles, that is defined by its contrast with everyday social structure rather than by any single setting.[1][2][3]
