Recreational-fisheries science

An angler survey estimating catch and effort

In recreational-fisheries science, a creel survey (or creel census) is a sampling programme that interviews anglers and counts effort at the waterside to estimate total catch, harvest, and fishing pressure; the name carried over from the wicker creel basket anglers once used to hold their catch. Boehm, Melstrom, and Pope's 2025 study used creel-survey statistics to place an economic value on recreational fishing. The referent is an estimation method for a fishery, measured by catch-per-effort and expanded totals, distinct from the yarn-package frame of a textile mill.[1]
