In fisheries science, depensation is a decline in per-capita recruitment or growth rate as a stock falls to low abundance. This meaning comes from Liermann (2001) in Fish and Fisheries.[1]
In population ecology, the same pattern is studied as the Allee effect: reduced individual fitness at low population density (mate-finding, cooperation failures). This meaning comes from Courchamp (2008) in Allee Effects in Ecology and Conservation.[2]
