digest: a standalone construct

One name. One construct. A landmark on the map.

How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to digest is hash.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Cryptography

A fixed-length hash of data

A short, fixed-length string of bits computed from a message of any size, designed so that even a tiny change to the input yields a very different output. The name comes from Rivest's Message Digest (MD) family of algorithms, which began with MD2 in 1989; the widely deployed MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm produced a 128-bit value and was published as RFC 1321 (Rivest, 1992). The referent is a compact fingerprint of data used to check integrity, not a bodily process or a compiled reference work, and the same digest is expected only when the exact same input is supplied.[1]

Unit
One digest value, a fixed number of bits (128 for MD5)
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Computed by running the hash function over the input and compared bit for bit against a stored value
