Putting a picture into words

Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a visual work of art: a poem or passage that describes, and often competes with, a painting, sculpture, or other image, from Homer's account of Achilles' shield onward. The referent is a text that renders a visual artwork in language, long studied as a site of rivalry between word and image.[1]
