Manufacturing metrology

The fine texture and roughness of a surface

In manufacturing and metrology, surface finish is the fine-scale texture of a machined or formed surface (its roughness, waviness, and lay), which affects friction, wear, sealing, fatigue, and appearance, and is specified on engineering drawings by parameters such as the average roughness Ra. Whitehouse's Handbook of surface and nanometrology is a standard treatment of how surface texture is defined and measured. The referent is the geometric micro-texture of a solid surface, quantified by roughness parameters from a measured profile, and it is a different construct from textile finishing or a wine's finish.[1]

Unit
The roughness of a surface, e.g. the average roughness Ra, from its measured profile
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Quantified from a surface profile by parameters such as Ra and Rz using a profilometer or optical instrument
