How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to treatment is condition.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Statistics and experimental design

A condition applied to units, versus a control

In experimental design a treatment is a condition, level, or manipulation deliberately applied to the units of an experiment, and it is compared against a control that receives none. Fisher's 1935 The Design of Experiments made this usage standard, drawing on agricultural trials where a fertiliser or a variety applied to a plot was the treatment whose effect was to be estimated. Here the word carries no promise of benefit: a placebo, a dose of nothing, or a teaching method can all be treatments, so the meaning is broader and more abstract than a therapy meant to cure, a plant that cleans water, or a written film summary.[1]
