Lowest temperature a liquid's vapour flashes

The flash point of a liquid is the lowest temperature at which it gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with air, so that a momentary flame flashes across the surface when an ignition source is applied. Drysdale's An introduction to fire dynamics relates it to the liquid's vapour pressure and lower flammability limit and distinguishes it from the higher fire point at which burning is sustained. In candlemaking the flash point of a fragrance oil sets the safe temperature for adding scent and governs how the oil is classified and shipped; more broadly it is the standard measure of a liquid's fire hazard.[1]

Unit
The temperature at which a liquid's vapour first flashes in air
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Determined by closed-cup or open-cup apparatus that heats the liquid until an applied flame flashes across the surface
