Sociology

any set of two or more people in one another's immediate physical presence, the basic unit of social situations.

In Erving Goffman's sociology of public life, a gathering is any set of two or more people who are in one another's immediate physical presence, the basic unit from which situations and social occasions are built. Goffman uses it as a precise term for co-presence rather than a synonym for a party or crowd, so that a queue, a waiting room, and a sidewalk encounter are all gatherings governed by rules of involvement and civil inattention. His 1963 Behavior in public places: Notes on the social organization of gatherings sets out the concept and the norms that regulate conduct within it. The referent is a structure of momentary human co-presence, analyzed through interaction order, and it is unrelated to the folded group of printed leaves that binders call by the same name.[1]
