Comics theory

The gap between panels where the reader fills in

In comics theory the gutter is the space between two panels, and McCloud's Understanding comics argues it is where the reader does the real work: through “closure” the mind supplies the action, time, and motion that the two framed images only imply. Far from empty, the gutter is treated as the engine of comics storytelling. The referent is an interpretive gap between images, a different construct from a book's binding margin or a street channel, sharing only the word.[1]
