Composite manufacturing

Drawing liquid resin through dry fibre under vacuum

In composite manufacturing, infusion is a moulding process in which liquid resin is drawn by vacuum through a stack of dry reinforcing fibres laid in a sealed mould, wetting out the fabric before it cures into a solid part (the family of methods including vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding). Hindersmann's 2019 Confusion about infusion: An overview of infusion processes surveys and classifies these techniques. The referent is a vacuum-driven impregnation process characterised by flow front, fill time, and final fibre content, and it is a different construct from a culinary steeping or a clinical drip, sharing only the name.[1]

Unit
The resin flow and fill time needed to fully wet the fibre preform under vacuum
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Tracked by resin flow-front progression, fill time, achieved fibre volume fraction, and void content
