A rigid bar pivoting to trade force for distance

In mechanics a lever is a rigid bar free to turn about a fixed fulcrum, which balances when the moments (force times distance from the fulcrum) on each side are equal, so a small force on a long arm can move a large load on a short arm. Archimedes' On the equilibrium of planes established this law of moments. The referent is one of the classical simple machines, the source idea the lock and the psychology meanings each borrow in their own way.[1]

Unit
A rigid bar turning about a fulcrum, balanced when opposing moments are equal
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Given by the ratio of the arm lengths and the resulting mechanical advantage
