A disrupted latch after artificial-teat use

In lactation science, "nipple confusion" names the proposed phenomenon in which an infant, after exposure to an artificial teat or pacifier, struggles to achieve or sustain an effective latch at the breast, or develops a feeding preference that disrupts breastfeeding. Neifert, Lawrence, and Seacat's 1995 Nipple confusion: Toward a formal definition set out to give the loosely used term a testable meaning, separating problems of latch technique from problems of feeding preference. The referent is a behavioural feeding outcome in the mother–infant dyad, with nothing in common with a threaded pipe stub or the structure of the breast beyond the shared body-part word.[1]

Unit
An infant feeding-behaviour phenomenon in the nursing dyad
Recovery means
Addressed by relactation support and latch retraining, though whether the construct is real remains debated
Measured by
Assessed through latch quality, feeding behaviour, and breastfeeding continuation after artificial-teat exposure
