In corrosion science, pitting is a localized form of attack in which a metal's protective passive film breaks down at discrete points, often where chloride ions concentrate, producing small, deep cavities while the surrounding surface stays intact. G. S. Frankel reviewed the controlling factors in Pitting Corrosion of Metals: A Review of the Critical Factors in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society. The referent is a corrosion cavity eaten into metal, not the shallow depressions that appear in a diseased fingernail.[1]
In dermatology, nail pitting is the appearance of small, punctate depressions on the surface of the nail plate, caused by defective keratinization in the proximal nail matrix and seen commonly in psoriasis. Its clinical features are described by S. K. Singh in Finger nail pitting in psoriasis and its relation with different variables in the Indian Journal of Dermatology. The referent is a depression in a growing nail, not a corrosion cavity in metal.[2][3]
