A thin oxide film shields a metal from corroding

Passivation is the formation of a thin, adherent oxide (or similar) film on a reactive metal that drastically slows its further corrosion, so that a metal which should dissolve readily instead becomes nearly inert: the passive state. It is why stainless steel, aluminium, and titanium resist attack: a self-healing nanometre-scale film stands between metal and environment. Macdonald's 1992 The point defect model for the passive state treats the film's growth and breakdown in terms of the migration of defects through it. The referent is the protective film and the passive condition it confers, along with the conditions under which that film breaks down into localised corrosion.[1]

Unit
The passive-film thickness and the much-reduced corrosion (passive) current it sustains
Recovery means
A disrupted passive film often re-forms (repassivates) if the environment permits; persistent breakdown leads to pitting and localised corrosion
Measured by
Characterised by the passive current density in polarisation curves, the film thickness, and the breakdown potential at which passivity fails
