The proximate determinants of fertility are the small set of behavioural and biological factors through which every social, economic, or cultural influence on childbearing must act: principally the proportion of women in unions, contraceptive use, induced abortion, and postpartum infecundability from breastfeeding. Bongaarts's 1978 A framework for analyzing the proximate determinants of fertility expressed observed fertility as the maximum biological fertility discounted by a multiplicative index for each determinant, so differences in fertility can be decomposed by mechanism. The referent is this intermediate layer of measurable variables, building on Davis and Blake's earlier intermediate-variables idea, and it lets analysts attribute fertility change to specific channels rather than distal causes.[1]
