Demography and family sociology

Below-replacement fertility and new family forms

The second demographic transition describes the constellation of family and fertility changes seen in wealthy societies after the classic demographic transition: sustained below-replacement fertility, later and less universal marriage, rising cohabitation and divorce, childbearing outside marriage, and a shift toward individual self-realisation in partnership and parenthood. Lesthaeghe's 2010 The unfolding story of the second demographic transition reviews the framework he and van de Kaa introduced, emphasising changing values and the decoupling of sex, marriage, and childbearing. The referent is a population-level pattern of union and fertility behaviour in post-transition societies, distinct from the mortality-and-fertility decline of the first transition.[1]
