release: a standalone construct

How to read this

Every construct on the map is compared with every other by the meaning of its definitions, and the closest one is surfaced here. The nearest construct to release is beta.

Hold this as a prompt, not a verdict. Two constructs sitting close in meaning is a reason to read them side by side and decide for yourself whether they are one idea under two names. It is not proof that they are. Compare the meanings in the Collider.

Neurotransmitter discharge at a synapse

In neuroscience, release is the process by which a neuron discharges its chemical messengers: when an electrical impulse reaches the nerve ending, tiny membrane sacs called vesicles fuse with the cell surface and empty their neurotransmitter into the narrow gap between cells. Südhof's 2004 review The synaptic vesicle cycle laid out the steps by which these vesicles load, dock, fuse on a calcium signal, and are recovered for the next round. The referent is a physical, calcium-triggered discharge of molecules across a synapse, timed in fractions of a millisecond, and it has nothing in common with signing away a legal claim, shipping a version of a program, or the fading tail of a musical note.[1]

Unit
One vesicle fusion event discharging a packet of neurotransmitter into the synapse
Recovery means
The emptied vesicle membrane is retrieved and refilled, and the transmitter is cleared or taken back up for reuse
Measured by
Detected as small postsynaptic electrical steps or by imaging vesicle fusion, and quantified as release probability and rate
