In coastal oceanography, wave set-up is the raised mean water level near the shoreline caused by breaking waves: as waves break and lose momentum, the excess momentum flux they carry (the radiation stress) is passed to the water column, tilting the mean surface upward toward the beach. Longuet-Higgins and Stewart's 1964 Radiation stresses in water waves; a physical discussion, with applications derived set-up from radiation stress, and Svendsen's 1984 Wave heights and set-up in a surf zone worked out its cross-shore profile. The referent is a change in mean sea level, measured in centimetres to tens of centimetres and important for coastal flooding, with nothing to do with the opening of a joke.[1][2]
