Snow science

A cohesive snow layer that releases as a sheet

In snow science a slab is a cohesive layer of bonded snow resting on a weaker layer, so that when the weak layer fails the whole slab can release at once as a slab avalanche, the deadliest kind. McClung and Schaerer's The avalanche handbook treats the slab, the weak layer, and the bed surface as the ingredients whose failure produces such an avalanche. The referent is a mechanically coherent sheet of snow prone to sudden release, unrelated to a cast plate of concrete beyond the shared image of a flat slab.[1]
