Strangles is a highly contagious infection of the upper respiratory tract of horses caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi subspecies equi, producing fever, nasal discharge, and the hallmark abscessation of the lymph nodes of the head, especially the submandibular and retropharyngeal nodes. Boyle and colleagues' 2018 revised consensus statement in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine sets out diagnosis, treatment, and control, including the airway obstruction from enlarged retropharyngeal nodes that gives the disease its name and the guttural-pouch carrier state that sustains outbreaks. The referent is this specific equine bacterial disease and its management on infected premises.[1]
