Cardiology

Heart muscle that is alive but temporarily won't contract

Myocardial stunning is reversible contractile dysfunction of heart muscle that persists after a brief episode of ischemia even once normal blood flow is restored, so the tissue is alive and re-perfused yet temporarily fails to contract normally. Braunwald and Kloner's 1982 The stunned myocardium named this prolonged, postischemic ventricular dysfunction and distinguished it from permanent infarction. The referent is a recoverable state of heart-muscle function, not a pool stroke or an abattoir procedure.[1]

Unit
The degree and duration of reversible contractile dysfunction after reperfusion
Recovery means
Contractile function returns gradually over hours to days once perfusion is restored, which is what defines stunning as reversible
Measured by
Assessed by wall-motion and contractile-function imaging after a reperfused ischemic episode
