Forest ecology

The plants growing beneath the canopy

In forest ecology, the understory is the layer of vegetation (shrubs, tree seedlings and saplings, herbs, and ground flora) growing beneath the main tree canopy, its composition set by the light, moisture, and space the overstory leaves behind. Oliver and Larson's Forest stand dynamics treats the understory as the reservoir from which the next canopy is recruited as gaps open. The referent is the sub-canopy vegetation layer, a driver of regeneration, biodiversity, and fuel structure in a stand.[1]
