In social-science methods a vignette is a short, carefully constructed description of a hypothetical person or situation shown to participants, who then judge or respond to it. By systematically varying details across versions, researchers isolate what drives attitudes, judgments, or decisions. The referent is a scenario stimulus, not an image.[1]
In optics and photography vignetting is the gradual darkening of an image toward its corners relative to the centre, caused by the lens aperture, optical path, and geometry rather than by scene content. It is a measurable radial reduction in recorded light, routinely corrected by photometric calibration. The referent is a property of the imaging system, not a hypothetical scenario.[2]
