A vocoder (voice coder) analyzes a speech signal into a compact set of parameters, typically the slowly varying spectral envelope plus a voicing and pitch description, and transmits or stores those parameters so the speech can be resynthesized at the far end, sending far less than the raw waveform. Dudley's 1939 Remaking speech introduced the device and the analysis-then-synthesis principle that underlies it. The referent is the parametric analysis-synthesis coding of speech, the ancestor of modern low-rate speech codecs and the source of the characteristic synthesized voice used in music.[1]
