In phonetics, vowel reduction refers to the shift of vowel formants toward a more central, less distinct quality when vowels are short or unstressed, explained as articulatory undershoot of vowel targets. This meaning comes from Lindblom (1963) in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.[1]
