Mathematics

A reference line for coordinates or symmetry

In mathematics an axis is a fixed reference line: a coordinate axis along which one coordinate is measured, or an axis of symmetry about which a figure maps onto itself. Descartes's La Géométrie established the use of perpendicular reference lines to locate points by their distances along each, the construction that underlies the x- and y-axes. The referent is an abstract oriented line used to measure position or define symmetry, with no relation to a neck bone or the stem of a plant beyond the common image of a central line.[1]

Unit
An oriented reference line along which a coordinate is measured
Recovery means
Not applicable
Measured by
Fixed by choice of coordinate frame; a point's coordinate is its signed perpendicular distance to the axis
