Rotorcraft engineering

Dust cloud blinding a landing helicopter

In rotorcraft operations, brownout is the loss of visual reference when a helicopter's downwash lifts a dense cloud of dust or sand during low hover, approach, or landing over loose, dry ground. The recirculating cloud can envelop the aircraft, hiding the surface and horizon and causing spatial disorientation at the most critical phase of flight. Milluzzo and Leishman relate its severity to rotor design parameters. The referent is a visibility and flight-safety hazard from entrained particles, unrelated to a utility's voltage reduction.[1]
